Researchers linked higher degrees to lower blood pressure
TUESDAY, MARCH 01, 2011 21:58 PM

Those who earned a higher education had lower blood pressure levels Many individuals know the importance of getting a higher education, as it could help lead to more job opportunities, a higher understanding of a certain sector and other benefits. However, a new study is suggesting that not only could having a higher degree open some doors, it could also lead to a healthier life.

According to research published in BMC Public Health, scientists studied more than 4,000 patient records to determine their education attainment as well as their medical history.

The study found that on average, women who completed 17 years of schooling had 3.26 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) lower than females who did not finish high school. For men, there was a difference of 2.26 mmHg between those who went on to further their education and those who did not finish high school.

Researchers also found other medical difficulties for those who did not finish high school.

"Women with less education are more likely to be experiencing depression, they are more likely to be single parents, more likely to be living in impoverished areas and more likely to be living below the poverty line," said Eric Loucks, assistant professor of community health.
