What to avoid when putting together an effective cover letter

What to avoid when putting together an effective cover letter These days, if a potential employer asks for a resume, it is likely they want to see a cover letter as well. In fact, the career development website Quintessential Careers states that not many companies will consider a resume if it does not come with a cover letter.

As a result, jobseekers are going to want to make sure they not only submit a cover letter along with their resume and application, but make sure it will help them shine in the eyes of potential employers. Fortunately, CBS MoneyWatch recently highlighted a few things these individuals should avoid when writing a cover letter, beginning with the very top of the page.

Rather than starting things off with an impersonal statement, such as "To whom it may concern," the news source suggests jobseekers try to find the name of the company's hiring manager or human resources (HR) representative. To find out just who exactly will be reviewing their materials, individuals can call the organization's HR office or do some online research.

In the body of the cover letter, jobseekers are advised to avoid overselling themselves by saying they are the ideal person for the position in question. After all, it is unlikely they know everybody else who is applying.

As for what makes an effective cover letter, CareerBuilder says this document should have a powerful opening paragraph that is more informative than cute or clever. Once jobseekers have introduced themselves, they are advised to launch into examples of why they are qualified to fill the opening and benefit the employer in the long run.

Using this knowledge, as well as the results of a career test, jobseekers may be well poised to navigate through a challenging economy and land their ideal position.
