Think before making jokes during a job interview
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 07, 2012 16:12 PM

Think before making jokes during a job interview Everybody loves a good laugh, but some jobseekers may feel unsure about using humor during an interview. After all, a chance at employment is nothing to take lightly, especially in this economy.

CBS MoneyWatch recently reported that not only is humor during a job interview acceptable, but it can also put both parties at ease during what can sometimes be a tense situation.

"Throughout the interview, balance humor with statements and examples that paint the perception of you as a smart, results-driven, team player who can roll with the punches," Yolanda Owens, author of How to Score a Date with Your Potential Employer, told the news source.

Self-deprecating remarks can go a long way, but they should also be balanced with evidence that potential employees are competent and capable of doing what is expected of them.

Something else jobseekers need to keep in mind is that everybody has a different sense of humor. Furthermore, a joke being told by a stranger may come across differently than one being told by a friend, according to consultant and author Alison Green’s Ask a Manager blog. As a result, candidates want to be careful to avoid saying something that can be viewed as sarcastic.

One way a jobseeker may be able to find an employer with a similar attitude and sense of humor is through the results of a career test.
