Many jobseekers believe employers should review social media pages

Many jobseekers believe employers should review social media pages Individuals may complete a career test and think they are on their way to landing their dream job, without considering how their Facebook or Twitter page could be standing in their way. While it is not uncommon for modern jobseekers to have at least one social media account, they need to be careful about what they are sharing online, as it can influence their employability.

LiveCareer.com, a career and resume-building website, recently conducted a survey of more than 6,600 jobseekers to gain insight into hiring practices and workplace privacy. When it comes to social media, more than 46 percent of respondents believe a company should look at a candidate’s online profile before making a hiring decision.

If a job candidate’s social media profile is not to an employer’s liking, 41 percent of respondents feel the company has the right to deny an offer. The survey also found that even those who have been hired should be on their best behavior online, as 40 percent of participants believe organizations have the right to fire employees based on the things they say on their social media pages.

"What people may not realize is the degree to which hiring managers can glean personal information about candidates by poking around their Facebook page," said James Freundlich, LiveCareer North America’s co-chief executive officer.
