In a poor economy, the unemployed may do everything in their power to land a job, from taking a career test to padding their resume. While some jobseekers may feel that altering a fact or two is harmless, these individuals are only setting themselves up for failure when they go down this dishonest route.

Kim Isaacs, founder and director of ResumePower.com, recently told CNN that the most common resume lies relate to a jobseeker’s education.

"People feel inadequate and that they have to do whatever it takes to get their foot in the door," Isaacs told the news source. "People see others getting ahead and think, 'maybe it's my resume.' The temptation arises from a desire to stay competitive."

The news outlet highlighted data from a 2010 HireRight survey in which 69 percent of polled organizations said they caught a job candidate lying on his or her resume.

As it is so easy for companies to conduct a quick online search to see if job candidates are being honest on their resume, providing false information is not worth the risk.

In addition to lies, the inclusion of certain terms on a resume may be viewed as nothing more than padding. According to Monster.com, when jobseekers waste a line of their resume with "salary negotiable," they give the impression that they have run out of things to say, as this is a given.
