When jobseekers take a career test, they may be able to gain insight into the type of profession that suits them best based on their strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. Unfortunately, the results of this assessment will not tell them how to dress for an interview.

Recently, Oprah.com spoke to a few experts to see what advice they have for job candidates who are unsure of what to wear.

Kat Griffin, founder of Corporette.com, told the news source individuals can always drive by their potential employer’s office to see what people wear to work, or have a cup of coffee at a nearby establishment to conduct fashion research.

Candidates of both genders may feel they are safe as long as they wear a suit. However, they need to pay attention to how well the various pieces that make up their ensemble fit, according to Frank Bernieri, an associate professor in Oregon State University’s psychology department. After all, a well-tailored outfit shows that jobseekers pay attention to details in areas unrelated to work.

When individuals look at themselves in the mirror in their chosen interview outfit, they should also make sure what they are wearing is still in fashion, Ritika Trikha of CareerBliss told U.S. News & World Report. If clothes look outdated, candidates give off the impression they are unwilling to keep up with trends.
