Jobseekers could become victims of identity theft

Jobseekers could become victims of identity theft For many jobseekers, the internet is an essential tool in the difficult job search. Unfortunately, using the web to apply for positions can also leave them vulnerable to identity theft.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, identity theft includes the unauthorized or attempted use of an individual's checking accounts or credit cards, as well as personal information in an effort to establish new accounts or commit crimes.

Modern jobseekers put large amounts of personal information online in an effort to land a job. Some individuals upload their resume onto websites like Monster.com, while others end up sending applications through multiple company websites.

"Although the internet has revolutionized job-hunting, making it a lot easier for job seekers to find openings, and for recruiters to find jobseekers, commonsense is required in order to protect yourself," Stephen Cobb, a cybersecurity expert with ESET, a security software company, told CBS MoneyWatch.

To avoid identity theft during the job search, individuals should leave desirable information, such as their Social Security number and date of birth, off of their resume. At the same time, jobseekers need to make sure they are not falling for any online scams. If a job opportunity sounds too good to be true, individuals have a right to be skeptical.

When searching for employment opportunities, something jobseekers do not have to be skeptical of is a career test. Using the results of one of these assessments, individuals can gain a better sense of the best profession for them.
