Deciding whether to accept or decline a job offer
MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2012 13:00 PM

Deciding whether to accept or decline a job offer As the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate still hovers around 8.3%, individuals might think the hardest part of their job search will be landing an open position. However, even when they get offered a job, people must decide whether or not they should accept it or wait until something better comes along.

According to a recent article in Harvard Business Review, one of the first things people should do is figure out what they want in a job. Taking a career test to understand strengths and weaknesses can help during this process, but applicants should make sure they are honest during interviews. If they tell a hiring manager exactly what they want out of a job, they will be more likely to get offered a job that suits them.

Additionally, experts say individuals need to be realistic about their prospects. Once they are offered a job, they should carefully consider the applications they sent to other companies and whether or not they are likely to be accepted.

Still, some professionals, like John Lees, a career strategist from the U.K., say applicants should also compare the job they were offered to their dream job, keeping in mind that they need to be realistic.

"Sometimes good enough will have to do. Let go of the idea that there might be something perfect out there," Lees told the news source.
