College graduates should prepare for the job hunt

College graduates should prepare for the job hunt As college students across the nation prepare to graduate, employers can expect an influx of applications and resumes. While some graduates may have already taken a career test and are better prepared for the job hunt, their less-experienced peers may find themselves stumbling through the process.

The Washington Post recently highlighted research from KPMG, a global network of audit, advisory and tax service providers. After speaking with 172 recruiters, 52 percent of these individuals said poor interviewing skills topped the list of the most common job candidate shortcomings.

As a result, Sarah Shuey, a senior manager in KPMG’s audit practice, provided the news source with a few interview tips college graduates may want to follow.

For instance, it is important for candidates to treat the person they are speaking to about a job opportunity with respect. Shuey said students sometimes act as though recruiters are their friends and act more casually than they should. For employers, this can serve as a preview of how an applicant may behave with a client.

Engaging in mock interviews and conducting extensive research on a company may also prevent poor interview behavior, Shuey said.

According to Quintessential Careers, a few other things jobseekers never want to do during an interview are chew gum, tell jokes, use slang words and check their cellphone.
