Baby boomer jobseekers should be careful when marketing themselves online

Baby boomer jobseekers should be careful when marketing themselves online As 2012 nears its conclusion, many unemployed workers have had more reason to be optimistic, as data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has shown a decline in the nation's unemployment rate. In January, unemployment was at 8.3 percent and now it rests at 7.9 percent. As a result, it may be a good time for any disenchanted individuals to pick themselves up again, take a career test and go after that dream job.

When it comes to jobseekers from the baby boomer generation, some of their problems finding work may be related to rusty job-search skills. The strategies they used when they were younger probably will not be very helpful in today's technologically driven society. For this reason, Fox Business recently provided a few online job-hunting tips for older individuals who are looking for employment opportunities.

No matter how old people may be, if they are looking for work online, they are likely browsing the listings on a job board. If baby boomers truly want to find a position, Rich Milgram, chief executive officer of Beyond.com, a career network, told the news source they cannot rely solely on these boards. Instead, they should place a focus on creating a strong personal brand.

One way to accomplish this is by creating an online profile on one or more social media websites, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. It is important for older jobseekers to not reveal too much about their age, as this may influence a potential employer's decision to hire them - even though age discrimination is illegal. As a result, Milgram recommended leaving out terms like "seasoned" and not listing the number of years of experience they hold.

If a resume is several pages long, it needs to be condensed so that it only goes back 10 or 15 years. The last thing baby boomer jobseekers want to do is appear intimidating to a younger hiring manager.
