Witelson: Differences in the brains of males and females should be celebrated

Sandra Witelson, who is a neuroscientist from the McMaster University, recently explained how male and female brains differ, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Witelson told the news source that there are fundamental differences between the two gender's brains. For example, a young male who is reading is using one side of his brain, while the other side is used for nonreading skills. However, in females, there is bilateral movement in these skills, which organizes them in a different way.

She added that a recent study found that women have 12 percent more brain cells than men. As such, Witelson said that may give females an advantage to earlier speech as well as have a better ability to learn phonics and verbal fluency.

Furthermore, boys' frontal lobes, which are important for judgement and planning, mature at a slower rate than girls'. As a result, there is more risk taking and more behavior that shows poor judgement for males.

"It is important to celebrate these differences and for the people in authority, whether they're men or women, to understand that, on average, women may bring different styles of thinking, different approaches, different skill sets to their job," Witelson, told the news source.
