The Mayo Clinic states that an individual who fantasizes about power, fails to recognize other people’s emotions and takes advantage of others may have a narcissistic personality disorder. Based on the results of a recent study, one’s behavior on Facebook may also be something to look at when trying to identify a narcissist.

In the study, which appears in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, researcher Christopher J. Carpenter found a link between the number of friends a Facebook user has and narcissistic personality traits, CBS News reported.

During the study, Carpenter had 294 individuals between the ages of 18 and 65 answer a series of questions related to Facebook. In addition, these participants tackled queries designed to assess their level of narcissism.

Carpenter found that study participants who were found to have a type of narcissism referred to as grandiose exhibitionism were also more likely to have more Facebook friends, according to the news source. These individuals tended to upload more content, frequently update their status and approve friend requests from strangers. It is believed these actions are all related to their need for more attention from a wider audience.
