The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that an estimated 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. While approximately 52,000 of these individuals die, nearly 80 percent are treated and discharged. As a result, some may wonder if any of these survivors have undergone personality changes due to their TBIs.

Raj K. Narayan, chairman of neurosurgery at North Shore Hospital-Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the director of the Cushing Institutes for Neuroscience, told the New York Daily News that this is typically not the case for most TBI patients. However, if the brain’s two frontal lobes each receive damage, behavioral changes are possible.

For instance, Narayan said those who have sustained a TBI may display inappropriate behavior or show a lack of inhibitions. In addition, the CDC states that these individuals may begin to act out, become more aggressive or develop depression over time.

Anybody who has survived a blow to the head and is curious to see if they have changed in any way because of it, may want to consider taking a personality test.
