Former Vice President Dick Cheney is currently recovering from heart transplant surgery, which prompted The Daily Beast to ask if a new heart will lead to a change in Cheney’s personality.

According to most of the physicians the news source spoke to, a new heart will not transform Cheney into a completely new person.

"It’s an interesting theory, but it’s one that we have not proven," Tracy Stevens, a transplant cardiologist at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Missouri, told the news outlet.

However, there is evidence that a new heart can lead to uncharacteristic personality changes. For instance, the news source highlighted information from dancer and choreographer Claire Sylvia’s memoir, "A Change of Heart." After receiving the heart of an 18-year-old boy who was killed in a car accident, Sylvia wrote that she became more aggressive and had cravings for Kentucky Fried Chicken and beer, both of which she had always disliked.

While some may think these changes in emotion and food preference come with a new heart, the news outlet reported that they may simply be the result of the medication heart transplant patients take.

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, two feelings that recent heart transplant patients may actually feel are depression and concern over their recent procedure. As a result, anybody who has undergone any form of major surgery may want to take a personality test to get a better sense of his or her emotional state.
