Study suggests adults should give more credit to child capabilities

Some people may feel that children are not able to comprehend certain issues. However, a new study is suggesting otherwise and that adults should actually engage children in conversation more, as it could possibly lead to a greater knowledge in their academic lives.

A new report from the European Panel on Sustainable Development (EPSD) found that young children are able to engage in issues that concern sustainable development. The study suggests that small children are more capable of thought process, reasoning and understanding than many people have previously perceived.

"We want to emphasize the issue of early childhood education for sustainable development and the importance of the EU attending to children's interests and rights within this area to a greater degree than is currently the case. It is also hoped that the research in the area is strengthened, as small children are an important element in sustainable development," said Bo Samuelsson, chairman of EPSD.

The report concludes that sustainable development should be integrated with early childhood education programs such as preschool.
