Study finds poorer kids less likely to do well in school

Poorer children could have a more difficult time in school It's common that parents strive to give their children the best possibilities in their academic futures, but sometimes there are not enough resources in order to make that happen. As a result, these kids can sometimes suffer academically, resulting in a crush of their potentials.

According to a new study published in the journal Psychological Science, children who come from poorer families are more likely to do worse in school, less likely to graduate high school and have a smaller shot at going to college. The researchers were able to determine that this path could be found out as early as 2 years old.

"Poor kids aren't even doing as well in terms of school readiness - sounding out letters and doing other things that you would expect to be relevant to early learning," said Elliot M. Tucker-Drob of the University of Texas at Austin, lead author of the paper.

Researchers suggest that growing up poor gives a greater chance of children not realizing their overall potentials, which could ultimately affect their schooling.
