Brennan Haynes, an 8-year-old Mississippi resident, stands out from others his age for several reasons, The Associated Press reported. First, the student has proven he has enough of a grasp on physics to take home the top prize in the regional Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair's lower grades physics division. Second, the gifted child also has Asperger's syndrome.

According to the Mayo Clinic, children who have this developmental disorder often have trouble socializing with others and exhibit an all-absorbing interest in certain topics.

As children with Asperger's typically do not like to socialize, Allison Hopkins, Haynes' gifted education teacher at Overpark Elementary, was impressed that the student behaved so well at the Fair, the news source stated. The second-grader's science fair project sought to find out which type of paper airplane design flies the farthest distance.

Haynes is the type of student the DeSoto County Schools District refers to as "twice exceptional," due to his disorder and the fact that the results of an IQ test he took place him in the 90th percentile.
