New research dispels bad behavior theory

Children who misbehave in the classroom are often told that they have a better chance of running into academic problems later in life. However, a new study is negating that theory by suggesting that bad behavior does not always result in poor marks.

According to research out of the University of North Carolina - Charlotte, children who often acted out in the classroom did not always have low grades, which has the scientists suggesting that the model of teaching may be all wrong. The researchers studied more than 350 students who attended at-risk schools over a five-year period.

"Children are not well served when teachers believe that teaching behavior requires different skills than teaching academics," said lead author Bob Algozzine. "Or that teaching academics will magically improve behavior."

As a result of these findings, the researchers suggest that it's important that teachers do not fully focus on improving either academic or behavior but try to combine the lessons into one, as it could lead to more positive outcomes for the students.
