Gifted students explore filmmaking at technology camp

When a child takes an IQ test for kids at a young age, the results of this assessment could alter the direction his or her life goes in for the better. For example, if parents know their child is gifted, they are more likely to find schools and educational programs that will nurture his or her unique talents.

The Tucker Elementary School in Georgia is one institution where talented students have a chance to shine. According to the website for the Houston County Board of Education, which oversees the Elementary School, gifted and talented pupils need an advanced curriculum. For this reason, Houston County provides instruction designed to "accelerate, enrich and extend" students' learning experiences.

Tucker students recently had an opportunity to do what not many elementary school pupils have a chance to do - make movies. According to The Telegraph, filmmaking was a portion of the technology and problem solving camp second- through fifth-graders attended June 11-13.

These types of opportunities are an ideal way for gifted youths with an interest in trying new things to expand their horizons. The five students who put together a film had no prior experience making movies or acting. However, the process certainly appeals to them now. Seth Lee, a fifth-grader who worked on the project, told the news source he now has an interest in pursuing a career as a film director.

In the students' film, "Habit Heroes," they played characters who possessed super powers based on the seven habits of highly effective people.

"We're gifted, so the thoughts kept coming," student Kailey Burress said in reference to how quickly the film came together.

Younger students who attended the camp put their technology skills to the test designing brochures using PowerPoint.
