Since gifted children are often more developmentally advanced than their peers, this can make them harder to relate to or understand. As a result, these youths’ talents can sometimes make them into social outcasts.

For instance, the mother of a gifted second-grader recently wrote to Huffington Post columnist Irene S. Levine for advice on helping her son fit in at school. Levine responded by saying that when children are different from others their age, it is often easy for them to be excluded from groups.

Levine suggested that when other children come to the house, the mother should pay attention to how her gifted son interacts with them. Levine also recommended talking to the boy’s classroom teacher, as this educator can pay attention to the child throughout the day and intervene if necessary.

The National Association for Gifted Children states that only 61 percent of classroom teachers have received the training necessary to meet the needs of this student population. As a result, a school for gifted children may be a more appropriate environment for these children.

To ensure that gifted children are placed in the right academic settings at an early age, parents should consider having them take a kids IQ test if they appear to be wise beyond their years.
