While the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Southeastern competition is designed for students at the college level, it is a 10-year-old boy who recently took home the event's top prize, the Daily Mail reported.

This past March, young Davis Fortenberry successfully held his own against 54 college teams, the news source stated. Fortenberry first began to tinker with robots at the age of 5. This experience came in handy when it came time to build the autonomous robot he would use during the competition.

"This is a very, very intelligent boy," Regina Hannemann, a researcher at the University of Kentucky, told the news outlet. "A 10-year-old doing this level of programming is astonishing."

Although Fortenberry's rivals were skeptical of the young engineer at first, they quickly warmed to him and provided a standing ovation when he was announced as the competition's winner.

It is not uncommon for gifted children to take an interest in robotics. For instance, the Mensa Foundation for Gifted Children reported that gifted and talented students from the Prenton High School for Girls in the U.K. have participated in the Robocup Robotics World Finals for the past few years.

If parents notice their child taking a strong interest in complex activities, such as the design and construction of robots, they may want to have him or her take an IQ test for kids.
