Career goals are just one reason why many women are waiting until they are 35 or older to start a family. However, the later these individuals wait to have a baby, the more health complications they may encounter during pregnancy. According to the Mayo Clinic, becoming pregnant later in life can predispose women to high blood pressure and diabetes, and endanger the life of their unborn child.

Of course, this is not always the case, as plenty of women 35 and older have given birth to perfectly healthy babies. In fact, new research from three institutions in the U.K. reveals that older mothers often raise children that are healthier and more intelligent than the offspring of younger women, The Daily Mail reported.

These findings, which were presented at The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health conference in Glasgow, Scotland, show that older mothers’ experience and maturity may be linked to their children’s development. Based on data related to kids who were born to women age 40 and older, researchers found that they possessed higher IQs than peers with younger mothers.

If older mothers are curious to see what impact their age has had on their children’s development, they may want to have them complete an IQ test for kids.
