The Autism Society states that 1 percent of American children between the ages of 3 and 17 have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). If a child is diagnosed with autism, he or she typically shows signs of an ASD through a lack of communication or low levels of interaction with others, according to the Mayo Clinic.

While children with autism may lack certain social skills, some show that they are gifted in other areas. For instance, 9-year-old DeMarion Greer is both autistic and artistic, the Monroe News Star reported. Earlier this year, April Williamson, a teacher at Berg Jones Elementary, where Greer takes classes, got to see the student’s talents on display.

Greer was sculpting a dinosaur out of a paper napkin, which is the student’s way of calming himself.

"Students with autism are just like the rest of us with the same emotions and traits," Williamson told the news outlet. "Their emotions are sometimes trapped inside and they need a medium to help them come out. Sculpting is his."

In addition to dinosaurs, Greer has been known to create aliens, lizards, birds and robots using paper, foil and modeling clay.

If parents feel their autistic child excels creatively, they may want to have him or her take an IQ test for kids to see what other areas they thrive in.
