The National Association for Gifted Children states that there are approximately 3 million academically gifted children enrolled in kindergarten through the twelfth grade across the country. In total, this group represents about 6 percent of the nation’s student population.

With so many talented students learning at advanced levels, there is a need for gifted programs in the nation’s education system. This is why the Green Bay Area Public School District in Wisconsin plans to launch the School for Academically Gifted Learners this fall, WLUK Fox 11 reported.

The new academy will be located at the District’s Langlade Elementary School and serve gifted students in grades three through six. According to Langlade Principal Tammy VanDyke, the decision to introduce the School was based on the need for gifted education programs.

"We’re looking at kids who are scoring in the 95 percentile on standardized tests," said VanDyke, as quoted by the news source. "They learn at a faster rate. So we want to give them that opportunity to do so."

If parents feel that their child is learning at a faster rate than his or her classmates, the results of an IQ test for kids may reveal whether or not the youth in question should be considered gifted.
