While men and women are considered equal at school and in the workplace, new research shows that when it comes to intelligence, women appear to have men beat.

James Flynn, a New Zealand-based IQ testing expert, recently shared some of the results of his study on IQ differences between the sexes with ABC News. All of Flynn’s research has yet to be published, as he will include it in a book he plans to release in September.

However, what the researcher did share was that the IQs of women around the world have been rising.

"Over the last 100 years, everyone in the developing world has been gaining about three IQ points, but women have been gaining faster," Flynn told the news source. "This is the result of modernity. In every country where women have an equal chance of modernity, women have caught men [in IQ testing]."

To arrive at these results, Flynn asked men and women in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Estonia to take IQ tests.

While these findings certainly do not apply to everybody, plenty of data shows that many women are more eager to enhance their knowledge and skills than men. For instance, the U.S. Census Bureau found that in 2011, about 37 percent of women had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 35 percent of men.
