Mensa event allows members to meet like-minded peers

Bragging rights are not the only benefit of excelling on an IQ test. Individuals who receive a high score may also have enough brainpower to qualify for membership to Mensa, the high IQ society.

Oftentimes, a high IQ can isolate people and make them feel as though they are cursed more than blessed. However, organizations like Mensa make it easier for gifted individuals to meet like-minded members who understand them.

Those who have an IQ that is in the top 2 percent of the population are eligible for membership to the society, according to Mensa International's website. Once they are in, they have an opportunity to attend special events, such as American Mensa's 2013 Annual Gathering, which was held in Fort Worth, Texas, from July 3-7.

According to an American Mensa press release, the event featured more than 250 lectures on a wide range of topics. Those in attendance could learn about subjects such as Sherlock Holmes and photography, while listening to speakers like robotics expert Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch and science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer.
