Personality tests may provide clues as to why students cheat
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2010 17:24 PM

Could personality tests possibly indicate whether or not teenagers are more likely to face academic struggles?

A new study that was published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied found that students who cheat during high school or college were more likely to be classified under subclinical psychopathy.

These kinds of traits include erratic lifestyle, manipulation, callousness and antisocial tendencies.

The researchers found that students cheat because they feel a sense of entitlement and a disregard for morality. Scientists believe that finding because students who are given an incentive of having good grades are more likely to cheat on tests in order to receive the rewards.

"Incentives such as high grades and scholarships seem to activate dishonesty in these individuals," the authors wrote. "The achievement goals shared by most college students trigger cheating in psychopaths alone."

However, the researchers said that because the students could be cheating in order to get ahead, it can be harder to differentiate those who are more susceptible to cheat.
