After giving birth to a child, some mothers may experience what is known as postpartum depression. Oftentimes, the children of mothers with this condition may develop behavioral problems or encounter trouble with language development, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, based on the results of a new study that appears in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, postpartum depression may not have any impact on a child's mental development during their first six weeks, dailyRX reported.Jonathan Evans, a professor at the University of Bristol and the study’s lead author, found that a child’s postnatal period is not one where their cognitive development is sensitive to the effects of postpartum depression, according to the news source. To arrive at these results, Evans analyzed data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, which included IQ test scores from 6,735 children 8 years of age. In addition, he looked at the accompanying mood assessments of 5,029 mothers. If parents feel as though their children are developing at a slower rate than others their age, they may want to have them complete a kids IQ test.
