The results of a recent study by researchers from the Kennedy Krieger Institute reveal that children's mathematical abilities in preschool can predict how they will do in this academic subject once they reach elementary school. These findings, which are published in the journal PLoS ONE, indicate a possible connection between young children's number sense and how they will perform once they begin formal math education. Number sense is the ability that all humans have to estimate quantities without having been taught to do so.While these abilities did not predict talents in other academic subjects, there was a noticeable connection between their early number sense and their performance on a standardized mathematics assessment they took two years after preschool."It was striking to find evidence that basic number abilities at such a young age may play a role in formal math achievement," said Michele Mazzocco, the study's lead author and director of the Math Skills Development Project at the Institute.Parents who notice signs of talent in their children at a young age may want to have them take a kids IQ test to see if they are gifted youths.
