The connection between exercise and intelligence
MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2014 13:20 PM

Strong kids may also be smart kids. Stereotypes of junior high and high school social hierarchies generally depict smart kids as physically inept while the jocks have heads full of rocks. However, research has found that leading a physically active lifestyle can actually improve intelligence.

Memory and fitness
Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) studied a link between growth hormones and brain function. The hippocampus is the brain's memory and learning center, and many believe it is easily affected by certain hormones, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1).

Researchers studied healthy adults by first taking their blood hormone levels. After having the subjects perform physical activities, they once again tested their blood hormone levels to see if the key growth factors increased. Turns out, they did. Exercise stimulated the subject's production of the BDNF, VEGF and IGF-1 hormones, which also increased memory function in the hippocampus. Because the study proved successful in adults, researchers would like to eventually perform the same test on children and seniors.

How to keep your kids fit
Although Boston University has yet to study the mental affects of exercise in children, you may want to ensure your kids are fit, just in case it will improve intelligence. In fact, children are supposed to get an hour of exercise every day, regardless of what it does for their brain power. However, you may not know how to encourage your kids to get fit. Here are a few suggestions:

Enroll them in a class: Whether your kids like dancing, swimming, fencing or anything in between, your park district is sure to offer fitness classes for kids. These are great environments where children can get the physical activity they need while under supervision and guidance. Also look for regional schools that offer various programs.

Take them outside: You can keep yourself and your kids active by taking them to the playground or going on a bike ride. These simple activities are free (if you own bicycles), fun and family friendly. Just be sure you stay outside for at least an hour to get the recommended amount of exercise.

Join a team: Team sports not only keep your kids fit, they also help them learn about working with others. Schools and park districts are great places to start looking for a sports team your kids will love.

If you're kids aren't interested in the first activity you try, don't fret! Just try another sport, club or outdoor experience.
