Hiring managers who work for companies that are more prone to worker accidents may want to ask job candidates to take a personality test before hiring them, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. While many businesses currently use this tool to find company leaders, new research reveals that the tests can also tell employers which applicants may be more likely to get injured on the job.Organizational psychologists from across the country are discovering that individuals who are more accident-prone and more likely to take risks may also have a higher chance of getting injured at work, which can ultimately harm a company, the media outlet reports. For example, a U.S. transportation firm recently found that individuals who were shown to be high-safety and low-risk applicants on a personality test had almost 22 percent less accidents, 40 percent fewer rule violations and 25 percent less compensation claims. It may be very important for hiring managers to weed out at-risk job applicants, as work-related injuries are fairly common. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 3.2 million people were hurt on the job in non-fatal accidents in 2009. Also during this year, about 4,550 employees were killed in this type of accident.
