Narcissistic behavior may lead to professional and personal problems
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2011 18:38 PM

Ego can often accompany fame, money and power. As a result, it is not uncommon to find narcissists in high-profile positions, such as those that are found in the legal field.

While not every lawyer is a narcissist, some may be, so The American Lawyer recently provided a few ways that these legal professionals can identify these personality traits and change their outlook on life.

According to the news source, narcissistic behavior can often be characterized by a grandiose sense of self-importance, the need for excessive admiration, a sense of entitlement, fantasies of unlimited power, a willingness to exploit others, a lack of empathy and an arrogant attitude.

If lawyers feel that they have any of these traits, their first step may be to take a personality test. For those who feel a change in attitude is in order, the news outlet suggested placing a greater focus on developing their listening skills. For instance, simply repeating what a judge or opponent has just said can show that an attorney has received the message.

No matter what job people hold, narcissistic behavior can be destructive. The Mayo Clinic states that individuals who have narcissistic personality disorder may encounter difficulties in their relationships as well as problems at work.
