People often get a sense of someone’s characteristics by the way they carry themselves, dress or speak. Now, new research from the University of Wroclaw in Poland has revealed that how an individual smells may provide a hint of his or her personality as well, Fox News reported. In a study, which is set to appear in the European Journal of Personality, researcher Agnieszka Sorokowska and colleagues worked with 30 men and 30 women, according to the news source. These individuals were asked to wear white cotton t-shirts for three consecutive nights and were not allowed to engage in activities that could affect their natural odors. The study participants’ shirts were then passed along to 100 men and 100 women, who evaluated five personality traits of the owners based on the smell of the clothes, the news outlet stated. Researchers matched ratings with the participants’ personality test results. Using their noses, raters were able to predict individuals’ level of neuroticism and extroversion based on the t-shirts alone, according to the news source. Additionally, raters were able to most accurately identify dominance when smelling the clothing of someone from the opposite sex. Based on past research, different types of smells have also been shown to affect people’s personalities in different ways. For instance, Psychology Today reported that lavender incense can induce a pleasant mood.
