Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is looking to push reform in the state's education system harder over the next year, as he announces proposals such as pay for performance and an educational improvement tax credit that will go toward assisting disadvantaged students. The Gov Monitor reports that as part of his "Opportunity to Learn" reform platform, McDonnell will be awarding teachers with incentives worth up to $5,000 as part of a pay for performance. Additionally, there will be a tax credit given to businesses that donate to nonprofits in order to provide scholarships to underprivileged children to attend private schools."As we've said before, a child's educational opportunities should be determined by their intellect and work ethic, not their zip code," the governor said in his speech. "We must ensure that students in every corner of the Commonwealth have access to great schools, excellent teachers and the opportunity to learn in an environment that suits them best."However, according to CBS 6, not everyone agrees with these measures. The news provider reports that a number of superintendents have called these plans "irresponsible," claiming that it will ultimately reduce public school funding.
