Although children may not always listen to their parents, a new study is suggesting that a parent's support is key for their child's educational performance.According to research published in the latest issue of the MIT Review of Economics and Statistics, parents' socio-economic background can impact a child's academic achievement, as well as the kind of programs they attend. The researchers suggest that if parents are from more affluent areas, the school systems may be ranked higher, as they strive to meet the requirements of individuals who come from a more privileged background. The study suggests that parents who are more advantaged exert more effort, which can positively influence the educational achievement of their children."In general, what we are saying is that a child whose parents put more effort into his or her education does better at school," said author Gianni De Fraja. "Therefore policies that aim at improving parental effort might be effective in strengthening educational attainment."
