Academic reform has been a hot topic over the past few years as the government looks to improve the overall rankings of U.S. students. However, cuts to school budgets have forced class sizes to increase and teachers to be let go.According to the Dallas Morning News, some teachers believe that the larger class sizes are actually detrimental to learning, as educators will not be able to focus on students on a more personal level. The news provider lists a number of studies that have been conducted that argue both points about having larger class sizes. On the one hand, some research has shown that there is a difference in terms of overall learning with certain class sizes, while other studies suggest those findings are inconclusive.Still, not all academics are convinced by the inconclusive evidence."With this smaller group you can touch students more," teacher Mary Ann Weaver told the news provider.A study from Harvard University backed up teacher concerns by suggesting that kindergarten classrooms with less students received more attention in their studies, which ultimately led to greater success throughout their academic careers.
