Children who have special needs often require extra care from their teachers because they need some help in staying at the same level as their peers. According to research from the Economic and Social Research Council, more teachers need to be aware of specific language impairment (SLI), which is a language disorder, in an effort to offer better outcomes for children who have the condition. SLI is typically diagnosed when children have problems with grammar and vocabulary. This is important to keep in mind for students who are having difficulties reading, as more than half of the children around the world who have the condition have a hard time reading. The researchers call for more information to be given to teachers on the condition, so that they can better assist students who are having difficulty. "We hope that this research will raise awareness among all teachers, not just speech and language specialists, of the complex difficulties that children with SLI face in the classroom," said researcher Lucy Henry. "We also hope to raise awareness of the many techniques class teachers can employ which will help children with SLI learn more effectively."
