As the U.S. is home to many diverse cultures, some children grow up speaking more than one language at home. However, when these kids go to school, they may require assistance in academic settings where English is the predominant language spoken.Currently, Latino students are the fastest-growing population in K-12 institutions across the country. According to the results of a recent study, which appears in Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation, evidence-based programs that address the needs of this group may be helpful in ensuring that these bilingual pupils succeed in school. The researchers behind the study worked with Spanish-speaking fourth- and fifth-graders at three separate institutions. These individuals were enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Languages classes that were taught by school counselors, who were also bilingual and bicultural. After eight weeks of 45-minute sessions, the researchers found that the bilingual students performed better on the math and reading portions of standardized tests than those who did not take these specialized classes. To ensure bilingual students' success, parents of these individuals may want to have their children take a kids IQ test to see which educational areas may need extra focus.
