Rae Tattenbaum, a psychotherapist from Connecticut, specializes in a type of brain training called neurofeedback. During this procedure, Tattenbaum places small sensors on the person's head in order to monitor their brain activity on a computer. While she is doing this, the participant is given audio and visual feedback from a second computer.Repetitive use of this treatment can help the individual maintain a calmer mind, Tattenbaum said. Typically, the professional works with children who have trouble concentrating in class and those who have conditions that affect their ability to focus.According to an article in The New York Times, many professionals believe neurofeedback can help with various neurological problems, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, depression, anxiety and autism. The news source reports that although the procedure can be time-consuming and expensive, it has become increasingly popular in recent years, with some health insurance companies becoming willing to pay for part of the cost.Parents who are concerned that their children are not keeping up with their peers academically may also encourage their kids to take an IQ test.
