Gifted students are typically highly advanced compared to their academic peers, which is typically why they need more attention in their curriculum.

Memorial Middle School has a program going with Mentor High School in Ohio that allows gifted children to attend programs of a higher standard in an effort to meet their needs, according to the News-Herald.

However, the news provider reports that while the child doesn't necessarily have to be "gifted" in order to participate in the program, they still must take a number of tests and consult with the school psychologist before they can be allowed to skip in subjects.

"When we go through the process, it's really a team decision," Mentor Schools gifted coordinator Heather Hardy told the news provider. "With anything, there's always a risk that something isn't going to go well and make a decision to not accelerate the child."

The National Association for Gifted Children reports that gifted children are defined as individuals who have an exceptional level of aptitude in comparison to their peers.
