The Environmental Working Group recently released its 2011 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce. This list is designed to show consumers which fruits and vegetables are the most likely to contain toxins. This year, the group said that apples are the produce item that has the highest chance of containing chemicals. The organization found that out of 700 washed and peeled apples, about 98 percent had pesticides.According to a series of studies published in ScienceNews, this may be important information for pregnant women, as children who are exposed to pesticides while they are in the womb tend to have lower IQ test scores than kids who have almost no exposure. The studies, which began in the late 1990s, found that children who were exposed to the highest amount of pesticides from farm work in California had IQ test scores that were seven points lower than the least-exposed group of youths in this area.Additionally, a Columbia University study found that in low-income Hispanic and African American families, an additional 4.6 picrograms of pesticide per gram in pregnant women's blood resulted in a 1.4 percent decrease in their children's IQ.
