A recent study by researchers at New York University indicates that low-income students who participate in home learning experiences may be more prepared for school than those who are not. This study was recently published in the journal Child Development. The results of past studies have shown that children of low-income families tend to be less prepared for school than their peers. This might mean that they cannot count to 20, they do not know how to write their names or they cannot recognize the letters of the alphabet. However, by analyzing over 1,850 children and their families, researchers found that those children who were exposed to a positive learning environment at home were more prepared for school than other low-income children. This may include parents helping their children read, giving their kids access to books and other educational materials as well as exposing the students to varying adult speech.Parents who are worried that their children are not prepared for school may want to create a better home learning environment and ask them to take a kids IQ test.
