As IQ tests continue to grow in popularity, many people have attempted to find ways to improve human intelligence. While some professionals claim that doing things like listening to classical music and completing crossword puzzles can accomplish this, a professor from the University of Michigan said that he has found a better way to boost intelligence.According to the university, psychologist John Jonides calls this exercise n-back training, and doing it for 20 minutes per day for 20 days can significantly increase scores on standard tests of fluid intelligence. This technique involves presenting a person with a visual or auditory cue, which is shown in a particular spot in a series of cues. In the next round, the cue moves to different positions and the participant must state when it has arrived back to its original spot. As the task goes on, it gets harder. The Wall Street Journal reports that when children were told to practice this exercise for one month, their IQ test scores increased by about five points, which is significant. Using the technique from the game, scientists believe that young students were better able to focus on important information, rather than irrelevant data.
