In order to see which students at Bacon and Norwich Free Academy are eligible to play football, officials at the Connecticut-based high school are administering an assessment that is very similar to an IQ test, The Bulletin reported. The purpose of this baseline testing is to assess students' mental abilities following a concussion, the news source stated. While the test is not designed to be hard, it can be difficult to complete if an individual's brain is not in the proper working condition. If this is the case, the assessment will pick up on subtle differences in recognition and reaction time.To establish what the student athletes' typical cognitive abilities should be, the Academy has them take the test in the preseason, before a concussion occurs, according to the news outlet."It provides us with a better tool to assess concussions, something to measure cognitive levels assuming a concussion has occurred," Jemal Davis, football coach at Norwich, told the news source.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the signs and symptoms of a concussion are difficulty thinking clearly, concentrating and remembering new information - all abilities that an IQ test may be able to assess.
