While we may all have our own thought process, how the brain functions is in large part due to genetic makeup, according to new research. The study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience from researchers at the University of Melbourne, was created in order to understand how some people have a greater ability to perform certain tasks in comparison to others. Additionally, the researchers wanted to look into the genetic basis of some neurological diseases. The scientists found that genetic makeup has a lot to do with how the brain is wired, and that the ability to perform certain tasks and neurological diseases could be due to heredity. However, the researchers were quick to point out that there are other outside factors that could lead to things going wrong for a patient who suffers from mental illness. Throughout the entire brain, the study revealed that 60 percent of differences within people are due to genes."We found that people differed greatly in terms of how cost-efficient the functioning of their brain networks were, and that over half of these differences could be explained by genes," said the study's lead author Dr. Alex Fornito.
