These days, there seems to be a pill for everything. While the labels on some nutritious products make promises that never come true, one natural supplement may actually boost an individual's IQ, based on the results of a recent clinical study. The natural supplement known as Pycnogenol is an antioxidant plant extract from French maritime pine tree bark. In order to test its effectiveness, researchers from Italy’s Chieti-Pescara University divided 53 students between the ages of 18 and 27 into test and control groups.Students in the test group were given 100 milligrams of Pycnogenol each day for a total of eight weeks. The researchers behind the study found that these individuals experienced improvements in their cognitive function.Just eight weeks after students from the test group began to take the supplement, they had better memory and mood improvements. Additionally, they were able to achieve higher scores on exams than participants from the control group."Oxygen-rich blood supply to the brain plays an important role for cognitive function and the improvement of vascular function with Pycnogenol may be responsible for the beneficial effects found in this study," said lead researcher Gianni Belcaro. As a result of this study’s findings, individuals who regularly take supplements may want to complete an IQ test to see if there have been any changes in their cognitive abilities.
