While technology continues to integrate itself into the school system, a new study suggests that it may be a good idea to keep students writing by hand, as they tend to learn better.According to researchers from the University of Stavanger, when someone writes by hand, it strengthens the learning process, whereas typing on a computer could actually impair this process.Researcher Anne Mangen explains that when a person writes, their brain receives feedback from their actions due to the sensation of touching a pencil and paper. Individuals do not get the same feedback when they are typing on a keyboard."Our bodies are designed to interact with the world which surrounds us. We are living creatures, geared toward using physical objects - be it a book, a keyboard or a pen - to perform certain tasks," she explains.Additionally, the study points out that because writing by hand takes a longer time than typing, the brain has more time to process what the body is writing. This could potentially bolster retention of the subject the individual is writing on.
