From previous research, professionals know that there is little correlation between the collective intelligence of a group and the IQ test scores of its individual members, the Harvard Business Review reports. However, a new study by a team of Harvard University researchers indicates that the collective intelligence of a group can be bolstered if the team includes women. In order to get these results, researchers asked participants between the ages of 18 and 60 to take IQ tests. Then, each participant was randomly assigned to a team. The groups were asked to solve complex problems that involved brainstorming, visual puzzles and decision making. Based on their performances in these tasks, each group was given an intelligence score. The results indicated that even if teams were made up of people with high IQ test scores, they did not seem to perform better than other groups. However, teams that contained women were able to outperform those that did not. This does not mean that women have higher IQs than men. In fact, a British study indicates that men and women generally have similar IQs, NewsWeek reports. However, the Harvard researchers believe that the results show that diversity can be positive for teams.
