For children, the results of an IQ test can be used to help parents see which academic subjects their kids might have trouble in. Or, if children are especially gifted in one particular area, adults may be able to tailor these youths' education around their strengths. Some students struggle with math while others excel in the subject. New research that was conducted by a team of psychologists from Johns Hopkins University have found that some youths may simply be born with enhanced mathematical abilities. The research, which was published online in a recent issue of Developmental Science, was based on a study of 200 youths who were an average age of 4. These children were tested on a series of tasks that were designed to assess what the psychologists referred to as an inborn "number sense."Also referred to as Approximate Number System, "number sense" is common in both animals and humans, and allows people to make estimations with just a glance. Based on the study results, the psychologists were able to identify a connection between "number sense" and mathematical achievement in school settings.
