Mothers who are looking to provide their children with the highest academic possibilities may want to consider breastfeeding their children, as a new study suggests that kids who receive these nutrients actually perform better in school. Researchers from Oxford University and the Institute for Social and Economic Research at Essex University found that even just four weeks of breastfeeding a newborn could have such an impact on their brain development that it will stay with the child until they are at least 14 years old. In order to complete the study, researchers observed more than 12,000 children who were born in the Bristol area during the early 1990's. The researchers then analyzed their test scores in reading and math at ages 5,7, 11 and 14. The study found that children who had been breastfed in their early ages did comparatively better than those who did not, leading the researchers to believe that this was a direct correlation with the breastfeeding. The researchers also pointed out that women who breastfeed are typically of a higher social class and have a higher IQ.
